Page Layout/ Overview

In the top right corner of the page, links labelled “Read” “Map” and “View” will take you to the Reader, the Map, and the Browser respectively.

The map is displayed in the centre panel. Click and drag to move the map. Use the buttons in the top right corner of the map to zoom in and out. Hovering over a point on the map will display the geographic coördinates for that location.

When places have been added to the map they appear as orange dots. Hover over a dot to see the place name. Clicking on an orange dot will bring up an info panel for that place, which can be viewed by clicking on the ‘details’ icon ().

On the left of title bar are, from right to left, ‘explore’ (), ‘legend’ (), and ‘details’ () icons. Clicking on these icons changes the information and menus available in the column to the left of the map.

Explore: clicking on the explore icon () opens a panel from which you can perform searches and add places to the map.

Details: when the ‘details’ view is selected, the side panel displays information panels pertaining to the sets of information currently displayed on the map. These may be character, group, place, event, or text panels. (For a description of the information in these panels, please see the ‘Info Panels’ section in the Reader description.)

Searching and Adding Places to the Map

To search by text, place, character or group, first click on the ‘explore’ icon on the title

By text: At the top of the ‘explore’ panel the texts currently in the collection are listed by author and title. Click on the title or on the + symbol to see a list of the books included in that work. Clicking on a particular book will add to the map all of the locations mentioned in that book.
To remove these locations from the map, click on the ‘legend’ icon and uncheck the box next to that book in the list of places added to the map.
The locations from many different books may be shown simultaneously.

By place: To add an individual place to the map, click on the first letter of the place name under the ‘Browse place names beginning with’ heading in the side panel. Click on an individual place name to add it to the map.
To remove this place from the map, click on the ‘legend’ icon and uncheck the box next to the place name.
Note that several transliterations or alternate names for the same place may be included in the list. It is only necessary to click one.
Note that purely mythical places and places for which coördinates have not been found are included in the list, but are not mappable. Unmappable places are shown in grey and are italicized.

By character: To add all of the places visited by a character to the map, first click on the first letter of the character’s name under the ‘Browse character names beginning with’ heading. Click on a character name to add the places visited by that character.
To remove these places, click on the ‘legend’ icon and uncheck the box next to the character name in the list of data sets added to the map.
Note that several transliterations and/or alternate names may be included in the list for the same character.
Characters with the same name are listed successively. Hover over the character name to display a short description of the character intended to aid in disambiguation. For more information on the character, click on the character name, and then on the ‘details’ icon where the character’s info panel will now be displayed.

By group: To add all of the places visited by a group to the map, first click on the first letter of the group’s name under the ‘Browse group names beginning with’ heading. Click on a group name to add the places visited by that group.
To remove these places, click on the ‘legend’ icon and uncheck the box next to the group name in the list of data sets added to the map.
Note that several transliterations and/or alternate names may be included in the list for the same group.

Removing places from the map

Places may be removed from the map, by clicking on the ‘legend’ icon in the title bar on the upper left corner of the screen, and unchecking the box next to the set of places you wish to remove.
If you wish to remove some but not all of the places in a set, click on the ‘details’ icon to switch to the ‘details’ view. On the map, click on the orange dot marking the place you wish to remove. When the info panel for that place appears in the sidebar, close it by clicking on the ‘x’ in the upper right hand corner.
